Physical Design Highlights :

Ozone monitors utilize the well known fact that when Ozone reacts with ethylene. The formaldehyde molecules produced thereof are in the electronically excited state. These excited molecules return to their stable ground state by releasing energy in the form of visible light. The intensity of light so emitted is a measure of ozone concentration.

Ozone Monitor Design

The monitor consists of a reaction chamber–photomultiplier assembly, a sampling system and an electronic unit. All the systems and components are housed in a sturdy cabinet. The specially designed reaction chamber is made of glass with two inlets; one for sampled air and the other for ethylene. It is provided with an outlet for exhausting the reaction products. The photo-multiplier is optically coupled to the reaction chamber.

The sampling system comprises a suction pump and devices for measuring and controlling the flow of sampled air and ethylene. It also comprises charcoal traps for removing ozone for facilitating zero calibration of the monitor.

The electronic unit encompasses the High voltage supply for the photo-multiplier, signal conditioning and amplifier and other electronics for control, display and recording.
